The untold truth about VPNs is that just about every one of them regardless of how good the service is will slow down your internet to a certain degree. That’s the sacrifice you need to make for the sake of privacy and security over the internet or for some people to stream their favorite shows from another location. Regardless of what you use a VPN for speed matters and so it pays to know which is the fastest VPN service in the industry.

How We Measured And Ranked The Fastest VPN Service?

One of the challenges of figuring out which VPN is fastest is to quantify all the various factors that contribute to speed accurately. Obviously running speed tests are a big part of quantifying speed. That said the fastest VPN for where you are located is not going to be the same for someone located halfway across the world owing to something called latency. Then there is also the fact that a VPN that’s fast for streaming videos online may not be the best for online gaming or torrents. Plus, the fastest service in the morning may not necessarily be as fast at night. Again it depends on the server, its location, and present load.

However, for our tests, we used a number of measurement criteria including various times of the day. We then averaged out the figures to rank the top 5 fastest VPN services in Canada. As you’ll see we’ve also included our own personal consideration based on how well these services streamed video and how fast they were for online gaming.

Faster VPN – Baseline Test

Before we start with the top five fast VPN, it’s essential to know our raw internet speeds. Our current internet speeds average out at 136.22 Mbps on the Download and 66.85 Mbps for Uploads. Now with this established let’s dip into our testing results.

PureVPN has by far some of the best speeds around. Admittedly there were hiccups now and then which lowered its overall score. However, when it comes to streaming HD content, downloading files via a torrent client or uploading files, PureVPN is the one service that performed flawlessly. Not only that but our internet took just a minor hit in speed.

Our downloading went down by around 7Mbps from the raw 136.22 to 129.78 and uploads took a hit from 66.85 Mbps raw to 50.75 Mbps running PureVPN.

At 3.29$/month PureVPN offers much more than speed, though speed is the one reason we’ve listed this on the top of our picks.

NordVPN is one of the most established and best secure VPN today. They are known to have some of the fastest VPN servers on the planet. However, the problem is that some of their servers are faster than others. So, if you’re in luck and happen to connect to the fastest server, your internet speeds will hardly take a 10% hit. Plus your proximity to the server matters a lot too. For instance, you’ll experience better speeds connecting to a US VPN server as opposed to one in China.

The one big drawback is that NordVPN’s auto selection feature often puts you on slow servers when in fact is should be putting you on the fastest one. Perhaps this issue will be fixed with an update sometime later.

NordVPN reduced our download speeds to 128.32 Mbps from 136.22 Mbps, and uploads from 66.85 Mbps to 56.56 Mbps. At $4.99 a month, NordVPN is one of the fastest VPN services but at a slightly higher price point.

Private Internet Access is one of the cheapest VPN services covered in this list. However, it is amongst the fastest across hundreds of VPNs that we’ve reviewed in the past. It is even the 3rd fastest amongst the dozen we reviewed for this article. All of this is not bad for a service which costs just $2.75 a month.

Our one issue with Private Internet Access is that the interface can take some getting used to. So, finding the fastest server is hit or miss. That said during our testing we were able to connect with the fastest server which is why our speeds didn’t take a huge hit.

A speed check showed that our downloads were at 126.49 Mbps and uploads at 17.07Mpbs. However, what these speed test results don’t reveal is streaming and gaming performance both of which were excellent. That makes PIA all that more attractive.

Now if you’re using the free version of CyberGhost, then you’ll not get amazing speeds. To get the speeds, we are talking about you’ll need to upgrade to the Pro tier. The Pro version costs just $5.25 a month and is one of the fastest VPN services you can invest in. Not to mention that it is also the easiest we’ve reviewed.

If you need more speed, the “extra speed” feature can be turned on prior to connecting to a VPN server. Plus, CyberGhost throws in military-grade encryption, excellent customer support and a promise that they will not log your sessions. So, there is no way that the FBI can snoop on your online activities.

In the speed department, CyberGhost registered 104.93Mbps for downloads and 29.70Mbps for uploads. Now we admit that these speeds don’t look impressive, but that’s only because you’re comparing it to the faster ones we’ve listed above. However, in real world use, you’ll hardly notice the difference. The only time you’ll notice it is when you’re trying to stream in 4K but then who’s going to do that anyway!

One of the reasons why many people tend to choose ProtonVPN is not necessarily because it is fast but because of the features. ProtonVPN has almost everything from excellent encryption to apps for iOS and Android devices. Plus, it is one of the few VPN services where downloading files from a torrent website actually works at high speeds.

When using ProtonVPN, we could hardly notice it throttling our internet speeds. However, the throttling became noticeable when we tried to upload a 1080p video. It was also apparent during gaming. That said as you’ll see below ProtonVPN is still relatively fast.

A number of successive speed tests averaged out at 100.35 Mbps downloading and 53.08 Mbps uploading. That’s not a bad score all things considered. We think it’s the best secure VPN for the money. However, the more encryption and security you add the further your internet speed will be throttled keep that in mind when turning on security features.

Look At Stability And Not Speed

Now many people who have read the article and reached the end will probably assume that they should go for the fastest VPN around in which case PureVPN would be their VPN of choice. However, in reality, speed is just one of the many factors you need to consider. The other major factor is stability. Usually, it is volatility which negatively affects test scores as opposed to the overall lower speeds or download rate.

After having tested over two dozen VPN services, we can safely say that even the best ones have their bad days. Sometimes a few servers will slow down for a couple of hours. Other times there is more traffic on the same server you are connected to, and that will affect speeds or cause downtime. However, VPN services that make a habit of bad performance should be avoided. Unfortunately, because our tests lasted just two weeks, it’s hard to say if your experience will be the same as ours mainly because we didn’t encounter any issues with the services listed above.

The good news is that all five VPN services we have listed above are highly stable and they provide more than enough bandwidth for anyone who is on any connection. However, those who are like us and are using a 100+ Mbps internet connection will not experience hiccups in speed when browsing through the internet, streaming video or even playing video games. Though at lower speeds the hiccups can be more pronounced but by the looks of it, the max throttling you may experience is around 20% of your internet’s current raw speed on average.

Finally, the VPN you settle on will mainly depend on what you want to do with it. Whether it is torrenting, or unblocking Netflix some of the ones listed above do better than others. That’s why we strongly advise that you read their respective full reviews. That way you’ll be able to get the best VPN service based on your use case.
